Mr. Ruiz is in his fifth year as Director of Bands at Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio, TX where he oversees the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Band I. He also assists with the Symphonic Winds and Symphonic Band ensembles as well as Jazz II, Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Symphony Orchestra. Prior of becoming the Band director at WCHS, Tony held the position of Associate Director of Bands at Winston Churchill High School, for 5 years, where both the Symphonic Winds and the Symphonic Band have consistently earned U.I.L. Sweepstakes awards under his direction. Along with the success in the area of concert band, he has also led the Jazz program to multiple best in class awards at competitions throughout Colorado, Louisiana, and Texas.
Originally from San Antonio, Tony attended Douglas MacArthur High School and earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. During his time at Texas State, Tony performed in multiple marching, concert, and jazz ensembles. He also served as Drum Major of the Bobcat Marching Band in 2004. After marching with the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps in 2003, 2004, and 2006, he has served as a member of the Brass Staff for the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps since 2011.
Tony’s professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
